Expanded Country Cottage with Very Bold Colours

Julie Nobes won the best detached house in this category. The stone built cottage dates back to 1822 and was originally two cottages. The two houses were knocked through in 1935 to make a single dwelling. The property which is icon in the village of Rudry used to be a nursery selling fruit to local markets and blackcurrants to Ribena during the war years.

Several changes have happened since 1822 and the biggest renovation being completed by Julie and her builder husband Chris. The judges found the property innovative with good use of space, making the most of the spectacular views out on to the garden and surrounding countryside. They particularly liked the “loo with a view” and the use of bold colours. Each detail of the property and its rooms has been carefully thought through to maximise the cosy feel of the cottage. The kitchen area which has been extended, leads on to the patio area is a great social space with plenty of room for entertaining and dancing inside and out.  The colour scheme in the kitchen draws the garden in making the area feel even more spacious. Bring nature closer gives a feeling of calm. The master bedroom with its stunning views and large glass windows is complemented with wood furniture and splashes of orange and navy making the room feel comfortable and cosy whilst still feeling airy.

Overall the judges thought that the property merited 1st place in the detached category .

"We were absolutely thrilled to have won first place. We are still improving the property, it has become a labour of love”
